100 MONKEYS VS. HARD ROCK CAFE LAS VEGAS

Okay, so I don't want anyone to think that I'm posting this strictly to talk about Jackson. I'm posting this because I am incredibly appalled at what happened and I think everyone should know about it. If you are a fan of 100 Monkeys, or just Jackson Rathbone himself because of Twilight, please read to find out about the incredibly disgusting treatment by the Hard Rock Cafe on the Las Vegas strip.

Disclaimer: I did NOT attend this concert. However, I have numerous friends who DID attend, so what information I have is on good authority from those people in addition to the comments posted on the HRC Facebook page.

100 Monkeys were supposed to take the stage at 11:30 pm and end around 1:30 pm. The sound equipment at the HRC was obviously on the fritz and caused the opening act, Imagine Dragons, to spend more than 30 minutes on stage trying to get the sound right and hear themselves in the monitors. By the time they were done adjusting everything, it was past the time 100 Monkeys was supposed to take the stage. They never got the front monitors working, but started their set anyway because it was getting so late. After each song, the lead singer for Imagine Dragons asked if he could get more sound in the monitors because he couldn't hear himself, which is incredibly important for a musician's performance. According to my sources, they were great.

100 Monkeys got onstage to tune up their instruments immediately after Imagine Dragons finished their set, but didn't get to start their show until roughly 12:30 am. During their entire set, the members were asking for more vocals, less drums, more vocals, less bass, more vocals, more vocals (you get the hint).

Everything was apparently okay until the improv song, Lipstick on my Collar. Jackson had been asking the entire song for more vocals, but adjustments were either not made or the equipment was in that bad of shape. About halfway through the song, either through frustration or getting into the performance, Jackson broke the microphone stand. Now, from what witnesses told me, he absolutely did NOT break the mic stand on purpose and was completely shocked when it broke. (I can say first hand that something similar happened at the Bakersfield show and he seemed incredibly upset when it broke, but that mic stand was being held together with tape.) He then continued singing while holding the mic stand until he got irritated and threw it aside. Shortly after the improv song, at approximately 1:45 am, the guys said they were taking a 10 minute break before coming back out for their encore.

Before 100 Monkeys came back on stage, two guys from HRC came onto the stage and started breaking down everything. These guys announced that the band would not be coming back out for their encore. At this point, many people had left, but a few did stay. The ones who stayed got to see one of the HRC guys knock over Jackson's beer as he was unplugging a cord. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing, but the beer was sitting right next to the control board for the guitar pedals, which got completely soaked, ruining the control board.

Someone in the now-thin crowd asked the guys on stage why 100 Monkeys would not be coming back out. The HRC guys said, "Because the band is being a bunch of a--holes." A few minutes after this statement, the band came back on stage and Jackson said they weren't allowed to come back out, even though they had another 30 minutes of songs planned. He apologized to the fans and thanked them all for coming to the show. Jackson did later tell some of the fans that HRC had been giving them a hard time from the moment they arrived and asked that everyone go online to tell the HRC exactly what they thought about the treatment they received. The guys didn't see the when the beer was spilled on the control panel. When they found out and discovered the damage, they approached the guy who did it, but it is unclear if a resolution was reached.

Apparently, HRC was mad because Jackson broke the mic stand, 100 Monkeys did not end on time (they couldn't because Imagine Dragons started late, which was HRC's fault due to bad equipment), and because the DJ that was supposed to go on after the show couldn't because of the time. HRC then banned 100 Monkeys from ever playing there again and demanded that they pay for damages to the mic stand and from the DJ not being able to play. I don't know if this means from all HRCs or just the one in Las Vegas, but if I were them, I wouldn't even want to go back there.

I have been a long-time patron of HRC and visit one whenever I'm traveling. No more. I refuse to give that corporation another dime of my money until they issue 100 Monkeys a formal apology. It was not the fault of either band that the equipment was not working, causing the show to run late, that fault lies with HRC alone. Yes, Jackson broke the mic stand, but it was clearly an accident. I could see them asking for money for the mic stand, but to force them to cut their show short and then ban them from the establishment...all after ruining a piece of the band's equipment...is about the most unclassy thing I can imagine.

If you are as upset about this as I am, please go to the HRC Facebook page or email the HRC manager at peter_lin@hardrock.com. No one should be treated this way and it is hard to believe that a theme restaurant/casino/hotel that is supposed to be based on music would do such a thing.

I'm so mad. I'm just going to work on my book for the rest of the night so as not to go on a complete tirade.

I WISH I WAS A MONKEY

See that picture? Notice that brunette in the picture? Do you know who she is? If you do, let me know so I can kill her.

Nah, I'm kidding. That's me. Yes, that's me with the love of my life, Jackson Rathbone.

This picture was taken after the 100 Monkeys show last Tuesday in Bakersfield, California at The Dome. I'm sure that you're wondering what in the world happened to his eye. I asked Jerad Anderson that very same question prior to the start of the show, but I couldn't quite hear him. All I got from him was the flapping of elbows that looked suspiciously like the Funky Chicken, though I was fairly certain that a goofy dance didn't cause a shiner THAT impressive. You may think I could have asked him about his eye while we were taking this picture, but no. The alcohol had been freely flowing and Jackson's coordination (as well as his speech) was highly impaired. I'm partially to blame for that (more later). However, I since have heard that while in San Francisco, a guy tried to steal Jackson's guitar. Jackson chased down the guy and a scuffle ensued. He did manage to retrieve his guitar, but got the black eye as a souvenir. Ah, the sacrifices people make for fame.

The show at The Dome was really good. The venue was very small, the stage was fairly low, and there was only a crowd of 30-40 people, so it was a very intimate experience. They sang "Wings on Fire", "Reaper", "Keep Awake", "Ugly Girl","The Monkey Song", and a new song called "Prayer", among others. It was a shorter set than most, but still entertaining. The improv song was called "Mustache", which was a reference to the beautiful and expertly groomed magnificence upon Ben Johnson's face. During the "Thank You" song where Jackson introduces the band, he said to thank someone and they just may buy you a drink. I found this to be the perfect opportunity to hand him the double Jameson I bought for him prior to the start of the show. He downed it in one gulp. They took a 10 minute break before they came back on stage to finish up. I took this opportunity to buy Jackson another double Jameson, which I gave to him as they were closing out. Before they walked off stage, Jackson gave me the sweat-stained hat that Ben Graupner had been wearing that night (you can see the hat in the picture if you look below Jackson's elbow). Jackson then walked back on stage for a moment to down the second double Jameson. Looking back, I probably shouldn't have bought that second drink.

The show at The Viper Room was a bigger venue and there were more people. Even though it was an older age group than the Bakersfield show (Bakersfield was all ages and LA was 21 and over), the concert goers were screaming like they were at a Jonas Brothers concert. The set list for this show was much longer. It included the songs I listed above as well as others such as ".38 Special", "Looker", and "Junkie". The improv song was called "Meatballs". It was quite hilarious and a little raunchy. In fact, Jackson felt the need to apologize to his mother before starting the song. I was smart enough not to buy any Jameson, but I still did manage to get a gift. The way Jackson did it was really cute. The curtains had closed and he stuck his head through them to blow me a kiss. About 30 seconds later, he stuck his hand through the curtains to give me the coveted set list (pictured above).

100 Monkeys played two shows yesterday at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. They are taking a break until February 5th when they will perform at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, California. Of course, it is always possible that they'll add shows at the last minute, so that's why Monkey Junkies should stayed tuned to the 100 Monkeys website to check for new dates and venues. You can also download a free copy of "Keep Awake" while you're there. So far, it looks like I'll be going to the show in Palmdale, but don't worry, I will NOT be buying any more Jameson.

You will only be able to see Dread at the After Dark HorrorFest 4. Each year, After Dark Films selects its "8 Films To Die For" and will play those eight movies in select theaters for a short period of time. Dread was picked to be one of those eight movies and they will all be shown from January 29-February 4th (check out the list of cities and theaters here).

Dread is about two college students, Stephen (Rathbone) and Cheryl (Hanne Steen), who decide to make a documentary on what people dread in life. Their other partner, Quaid (Shaun Evans), grows bored with interviews and decides to take the project to a whole new level. Soon, Stephen and Cheryl find themselves subjects of a hideous experiment they brought to life (read full synopsis and view trailer here). Fortunately for me, Dread will be available on DVD on March 23, 2010. That means I don't have to wait too long to have something new of Jackson's that will make me drool...and have nice dreams...and tick off my husband.

100 MONKEYS CONCERT AT THE ROXY

Okay, I know I'm a bad person for not posting this sooner, but the kids are out of school right now and my sanity is hanging on by a thread. In fact, going to The Roxy in Hollywood on Sunday, December 27th to see Jackson Rathbone's band, 100 Monkeys, is pretty much the only reason I have any sanity right now.

It was the first time I had ever been lucky enough to see the Monkeys and I had a great time, especially when I got approached by Marty, the Bananager (he's their manager and walks around in a banana suit). The concert opened with a band called The Absolute who was followed by the Lemon Sun Band before 100 Monkeys took the stage. Although I had seen Jackson in person once before at the New Moon Premiere, seeing him on stage was a completely different experience. We got to see a little bit more of his personality and he definitely used his sex appeal to get the girls in the crowd to squeal...and buy him Jameson (the other difference was that I didn't have 40 17-year-old girls behind me who were crushing me into a metal barricade and only barely saving my ribs from being broken). The famous "Monkey Switcheroo" was interesting. It really was the first time I had seen a band where every member played every instrument and they all took turns singing songs. Most of the songs that night were from their album, "Grape", but there were a few that are exclusive to their shows, like the uplifting little ditty that goes, "I'm gonna kill you in your sleep, so you'd better try, try to keep awake". We were treated to Jackson singing, among others, "Looker" and "Ugly Girl", while Ben G. sang "Wings on Fire" and "Clippity Clop", and Ben J. sang "Junkie" and my personal favorite, "The Monkey Song". Apparently, it is a crowd favorite for one of the band members to take a suggestion from the crowd for the subject of a made-up song. Jackson had the honor that night and the subject was Jerad, one of the members of the band. Jackson literally made up a four minute song about his band mate on the spot and it was hilarious.

100 Monkeys will be performing in Las Vegas tonight and tomorrow night before heading to Albuquerque on January 4th. They still haven't announced all the dates and venues for their 100 Cities Tour, but if the gods allow, I plan to see them in Fresno, Sacramento, and San Francisco. They also plan to go to my hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana as well as New Orleans. You never know, that may occur while I'm home visiting family...or it may not. Either way, I'll report on those shows that I'm lucky enough to attend. Also, if you are like me, you've been anxiously awaiting for them to announce their upcoming dates for their 100 Cities Tour. Luckily, that wait is finally over! 100 Monkeys posted dates for 19 shows of their 100 Cities Tour yesterday on their website, 100MonkeysMusic.com.

Fans have been pulling out their hair since August 28th when jackson-rathbone.com first posted news about the 100 Cities Tour. Little information was given until September 30th when the band held a month-long contest for their fans to select the U.S. cities for the band to visit (the contest for the international tour dates started on November 1st). The first 20 cities were announced on October 29th. The other 80 cities weren't announced until November 11th, however, no solid dates were announced until yesterday. So far, dates for shows include Los Angeles, San Diego, Albuquerque, Dallas, Houston, and Denver. Tickets range from $13-$30 and some shows are even free! No word yet on when the rest of the dates will be released.

100 Monkeys consists of Jackson Rathbone, Ben Graupner, Ben Johnson, Jerad Anderson, and Lawrence Abrams and is unique in that each member can play every instrument. In between songs, one of them will yell 'switcharoo' and they switch instruments. “It’s amazing to see musicians that can play six or seven different instruments without missing a beat. There’s never a dull moment when they’re on stage,” said Tim Crockett of New Castle Entertainment. 100 Monkeys has been featured on MTV, VH1, Entertainment Tonight and in People Magazine. They have an eclectic blend of soulful music and have been compared to The Doors, Tom Waits and Coldplay. Their first full length studio album, Grape, was released on November 29th and includes tracks such as "The Monkey Song", "Junkie", and ".38 Special".
